Conference raises awareness on climate change in semiarid regions:

The call for a summit on sustainable development in drylands was among the requests of the Fortaleza Declaration, document adopted at the closing of the Second International Conference Climate, Sustainability and Development in Semi-Arid regions, which took place in Fortaleza, Brazil between 16 and 20 August. The Declaration asks the UN to consider the current situation of risk of drylands, mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa, South of Asia and the Middle East. The document is supposed to influence in the agenda of the preparatory process and content of discussion of Rio+20, the Earth Summit in 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The Declaration also recommend that the preparatory meetings for Rio+20 are organized according to global ecosystems, to define options of policies based on the need of those biomes. Brazil converts debt in environmental protection
:

The Brazilian government signed an agreement, on 12 August, with the United States to convert a debt of US$ 21 million in actions to protect the biomes Atlantic rainforest, Cerrado and Caatinga (savannah and semi-arid regions). A specific fund will be set up to receive the money, which will be managed by a committee composed of 9 members, including a representative of the US government, that will define and approve the projects. Actions will include the conservation of protected areas, management of natural resources and support of sustainable activities of local communities. Other 15 countries have already signed similar agreements with the US government.

UN creates panel on sustainable development
:


UN Sceretary-General Ban Ki Moon has announced, on 9 August, the establishment of a high-level panel on sustainable development. The group will come up with recommendations to overcome poverty and cope with climate change. The panel is composed of 21 members including government representatives of governments, the private sector and civil society of developed and developing countries. The report is expected to be released by the end of 2011, containing information to be included in the agenda of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) be take place in Rio de Janeiro in 2012.

Brasil emerges victorious with WTO decision and continues prohibiting the import of used tires

On the 12th of June FBOMS received the report of the decision of the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding the dispute between the European Union and Brazil over reformed tyres. Based on the conclusions of the report, Brazil will be permitted to continue to prohibit the import of reformed tyres. At the same time, it must effectively guarantee the prohibition of the import of these products.
